When the cloud goes dark, is your solar still working?

There are three different outages people mix up, and they have three different answers.

Your internet is down

Your panels keep producing exactly as before; the inverter doesn't need the internet to make power. But a cloud monitoring app goes blind, because your data can't reach their servers. Local monitoring doesn't notice: your phone and inverter are both on your home Wi-Fi, and your router keeps running the local network even with the ISP line dead. This is where local monitoring simply wins outright.

Their servers are down

Monitoring platforms have outages, and when one hits, thousands of owners refresh a dead app while their systems hum along fine. With local monitoring there is no "their servers." An outage of somebody's cloud can't touch a connection that never leaves your house.

The power grid is down

Honesty required here: a standard grid-tied inverter shuts itself off during a blackout. It's a safety requirement (anti-islanding), protecting line workers from your panels back-feeding the grid. So during a true power outage, most systems produce nothing to monitor, and your router is off anyway. The exception is hybrid systems with battery backup, which keep parts of your home powered; there, local monitoring on the home network keeps showing battery state and production while the cloud path may or may not survive.

The quiet failure nobody notices

The subtler problem isn't dramatic outages; it's silent gaps. When a cloud connection drops for a day (a Wi-Fi password change, a flaky link, a decommissioned cellular modem), many owners never notice until the portal shows a hole in the chart, or worse, weeks of a fault they didn't hear about. An app that reads the inverter directly, with an alert when the inverter goes unreachable or production stays at zero on a sunny morning, tells you the day something breaks.
