In 2026, SMA wound down its residential business in Australia after installing gigawatts of Sunny Boy and Sunny Tripower systems over 15 years. Whatever happens to any company's apps or portals, local monitoring keeps working, because SunSpec Modbus is a standard built into the inverter itself. No company needs to exist for your inverter to report to your phone.

Three steps to local monitoring

SMA ships with the Modbus TCP server deactivated. A one-time settings change in the inverter's web interface turns it on for good.

Enable the Modbus TCP server

Open the inverter's web interface in a browser (enter its IP address, or use SMA's local login address). Log in with the Installer or admin login; on recent firmware this is the admin password created at setup, so many owners can do it themselves. Then go to Device Parameters, choose Edit parameters, then External Communication, then Modbus, and set TCP Server to Yes. The default port is 502. Save the parameters. If you only have the standard user login, ask your installer to make this change.

Give the inverter a fixed address

Your inverter needs to keep the same address on your home network. Open your router or internet provider's app, find the inverter under "Connected Devices," and choose "Reserve IP" or "Fixed IP." SMA's Wi-Fi connection can be less stable than Ethernet for continuous polling, so use a wired connection if you have the option.

Add it in SolarMark

Install SolarMark, add an inverter, and choose "SunSpec Standard" as the type. Enter the inverter's IP address and port 502, or let the built-in network scan find it for you. One SMA-specific tip: SMA serves SunSpec data at unit ID 126 rather than the usual 1. If the connection succeeds but no data appears, that's the setting to check; the in-app setup guide covers it.

Is SolarMark affiliated with SMA?

No. SolarMark is an independent app built by an independent developer and is not affiliated with or endorsed by SMA Solar Technology AG. It reads data using SunSpec Modbus, the open industry-standard protocol SMA inverters support.

Which SMA models are compatible?

Models with a built-in web interface and a network connection: recent Sunny Boy and Sunny Tripower generations, Sunny Boy Storage, and similar. Older TL-21 era units can support Modbus after a firmware update but must be enabled with SMA's Sunny Explorer software, and units without any network port can't connect. Use the free 14-day trial to confirm your specific setup before purchasing.

Do I need my installer to set this up?

It depends on who holds the installer-level login. On recent firmware the admin password created during commissioning works, and many owners have it. If you only have the standard user login, your installer can enable Modbus in a couple of minutes.

I heard SMA is leaving my market. Will my monitoring stop working?

Local monitoring can't be taken away. SunSpec Modbus is a standard built into the inverter's own firmware, so it works regardless of any company's business decisions, and it works even when your internet is down. That independence is the whole point of monitoring locally.

Will this interfere with Sunny Portal?

No. Local Modbus polling runs alongside the inverter's normal reporting, so any existing cloud monitoring keeps working exactly as before. SolarMark simply gives you a direct local view with faster updates.

What does SolarMark cost?
